How much should you tip?
There's no single "right" number — a tip is a thank-you for service, and what feels right depends on where you are and how the visit went. That said, a few general benchmarks help:
- 15% — 15% — the everyday baseline for decent restaurant service.
- 18–20% — 18–20% — for great service, special occasions, or when the bill was handled exceptionally well.
- 10% — 10% — for service that was adequate but noticeably off, or very simple counter service.
- 0% — Nothing or small change — where a service charge is already added, or for takeout where no table service happened.
For food delivery and rideshare, tips tend to land between 10% and 20%, depending on distance, weather, and how smoothly the drop-off goes. At a bar, many people tip $1–2 per drink or round up to the nearest dollar.
The most important thing: tip based on the service you actually received, and use a calculator so you're never fumbling with mental math at the table.
How the math works
The calculator uses three simple formulas:
- Tip = bill total × tip percentage
- Total = bill total + tip
- Per person = total ÷ number of people
If you choose a rounding step, the total is rounded up to that amount and the tip becomes the difference — so a $47.30 bill with 15% becomes $55.00 instead of $54.40.

Quick tipping reference
| Situation | Typical tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant dining | 15–20% | On the pre-tax subtotal when shown. |
| Food delivery | 10–20% | Check if the app already adds a delivery fee. |
| Rideshare | 10–15% | Optional but appreciated. |
| Bar / bartender | 15–20% or $1–2 per drink | Per-drink is common at a busy bar. |
Customs vary by country. In places where a service charge is already added to the bill (common in some parts of India and Europe), an extra tip is optional — check the receipt first.
Rounding explained
Paying with cash or dividing an uneven amount often results in awkward coin totals. Rounding rounds your final bill up to the nearest step (such as 0.50, 1.00, or 5.00).
When you select a rounding interval, the calculator computes the standard tip, bumps the total up to the next interval, and rolls the difference into the tip. That way the staff receives slightly more and everyone pays a round number.
Splitting the bill with a group
Splitting is simple: enter the number of guests sharing the meal. The calculator divides the bill total, the tip, and the final payment equally across everyone.
Combined with rounding, it ensures every person pays a clean amount without counting out small change.
